More Reptile Livefoods Info

Live foods form a staple diet for many reptiles. They promote natural hunting behaviour in your pet, keeping them busy and helping them not becoming bored. They are also full of protein and nutrients which will keep your reptile healthy and are used for ‘gut-loading’.  However, without a little care the food may become less nutritious and inactive, thus removing the reason for using them as food in the first place. Some basic care of your live food will ensure they stay alive, active and contain the most nutrients possible for your reptile.

Reptile Livefood care

Crickets and Locusts

Crickets and Locusts are very similar in their needs and benefits. They can both be kept in small plastic enclosures like cricket keepers which are designed to provide adequate ventilation and space. If filled with the bottom of an egg box or toilet roll tubes they will also provide extra surface area and hiding places. Keeping their enclosure simple will aid with cleaning. Keeping the container at around 29 ºC will provide an optimal environment.

Bug grub is a good staple for your live foods and includes lots of beneficial vitamins and minerals for your reptile. Feed bug grub along with fresh fruit and vegetables to maximise health. Bug gel should be used to keep the crickets and locusts hydrated, as a bowl of water will probably lead to them drowning.

Remove any dead crickets as required.

Mealworms

Mealworms are live foods which are more suitable as treats, rather than a staple food, but their nutritional value is still very important.

Keep mealworms  and morios (large mealworms) in a ventilated plastic container and free from damp. Bug grub makes a great substrate for mealworms which they will eat and burrow in. Adding fruit and veg will give them moisture and adds vitamins and minerals. Keep replaceing the fruit and veg fresh with fresh pieces and sieve the worms out of the substrate and replace with new as required.

Wax worms

Wax worms should be kept in a ventilated container with an oat bran or weetabix type substrate. Keep in a cool (5 - 10 ºC) location; a fridge if possible as this will put them into a hibernating state and they will usually retain their goodness with no extra care. They should only be fed as treats as they have a high fat content, think of them as chocolate for reptiles!

Reptile Livefood preparation

Feed or ‘gut-load’ your insects around 24 hours before feeding to your reptile.

Livefoods can also be dusted with calcium or vitamin supplements when fed to your pet. Frequency required will depend on the species of reptile you have and any other methods of calcium, vitamin or light additives you use.

After all your live foods have been used their keeper box should be cleaned thoroughly with a disinfectant before being reloaded with the next batch of food.
