Reptile Lighting

Lighting is important for reptiles for vision, day and night time awareness and also for its UV (ultra violet) benefits. In the wild a reptile will be exposed to direct natural sunlight, which does not occur when kept in captivity. For most species the UV spectrum of light is essential. UV is split into UVA and UVB. UVA can be seen by reptiles and promotes general health. UVB is essential for many reptile species as it helps production of D3 in the skin which ultimately leads to calcium production, so without UVB exposure pet reptiles can suffer from conditions such as Metabolic Bone Disease. Many light sources also produce heat which is also required by many reptiles.
